Another Contender for Global Fashon Dominance

Back in August we wrote a post entitled Move Over Paris and Milan...Turkey Wants In documenting Turkey's quest to become an international fashion city. Well, it looks like Turkey is not in the running alone.

At the close of Seoul Fashion Week, Mayor Oh Se-hoon continues his quest to make Seoul the world's fifth fashion capital as well, after Paris, New York, Milan and London.  Global fashionistas around the world are acknowledging that Seoul is not playing around, they really want the spot and have pushed aggressively for the past years.  For example, over 2.5 billion went into organizing fashion week. And the money chain doesn't stop there.  The city announced earlier this year that it would invest over 10 billion toward creating studios and manufacturing clusters in order to house the 100 new designers.  They are also launching "Seoul Collection in Global Fashion City", a program that will relocate about 20 designers to fashion capitals around the world.

So why the sudden rushes to become a fashion capital, especially with global consumers not buying? We have a theory. Very rarely, the secretive 300 billion dollar fashion industry does a major redesign...and now is the beginnings of a massive change. Print is dying while online seems to grow by leaps and bounds, the economy recently knocked New York City from its number one position which as put the word "change" in the air.  Trust us, change is coming and we think international cities around the world are feeling this and are beginning to take advantages of these new and rare opportunities.

15 Year Old Model Takes Paris By Storm

15 years old 5 foot 11 inch model, Shena Moulton, has made a major international splash as the new black Caribbean model.  If you haven't heard of Shena yet, you will soon.  She is the youngest Jamaican model to be signed to an international agency, Muse Models, in 2007 at 13 years old after winning a competition called Fashion Faces of the Caribbean. However, this summer she has seen incredible press and international bookings.

During her first season at Paris Fashion week, Moulton did 11 shows including Louis Vuitton, AF Vandervost, Kenzo, and more.  IN New York, she walked for Calvin Klein.  The buzz worldwide hasn't stopped since her appearance.  GAP Japan recently featured her and Pharrell Willians in their new international campaign.

"I am very proud of myself 'cause I've been doing so good, so well in Paris," Moulton told The Sunday Gleaner.

"It was more than I expected. The experience is good, it has been more amazing. I couldn't ask for more. Paris was especially great," Moulton said.

"The scandalous truth is that the majority of workers in the global fashion industry rarely earn more than two dollars a day in an industry worth more than £36bn a year in the UK alone. Many have to work excessive hours just to get this meagre amount and have no possibility to earn wages needed to properly feed, clothe, house and educate their families."

That strong and shocking statement can be found in a new report called Let's Clean Up Fashion: The State of Pay Behind the UK High Street(.pdf). It was published by Labour Behind the Label, a sweatshop campaigning group that is criticizing UK retailers for not paying hundreds of thousands of workers what they need to survive, support their families and lead a normal life.

Maybe this is the reason why New York's Garment District is failing. Back in the 50's almost 80 percent of garments were purchased and produced there, today maybe 3%. This epidemic was caused because garment exporting countries are setting their minimum wage so low that it effectively attracts British retailers' looking for cheap fashion that's then market up making up the multi billion dollar business.

Whatever your thoughts, this report is definitely worth reading.

The Collection That Traveled The World

Oscar de la Renta took New York Fashion Week by storm on Wednesday by sharing his Spring 2010 collection that we may be dubbing as this year’s "global" collection. Each piece looked as if it came from a fashionistas closet that visited Africa, Asia, South America and many other global destinations with style and grace.

Elements like safari jackets, linen pants, white blouses, purple embroidery and more made us think that maybe Oscar has a little secret of his own...maybe he has a travel bug. Whatever the reason for this refreshing collection, we are inspired to travel and do it in style.

Fashion Night Out Revives Shopping for One Day

From London to New York, from Phoenix to Milan, Fashion's Night Out, last night, was a huge hit as thousands and thousands and thousands of fashionistas hit the streets and went shopping in order to try and boost the economy.

With the biggest recession in US history in 70 years, customers came out in droves to support the economy and get the shopping bug going again. And the stores definitely wooed customers, from free cocktails, live music, free food, hand massages, and giveaways, customers felt special and stayed around for hours at a time. Stores in other fashion centers, including in Britain, Italy, France, Greece, Russia, Brazil, India, Spain, China, Germany, Japan and Taiwan, joined in the shopping extravaganza.

Even Anna Wintour, who started the initiative, made some rare public appearances. Plus, Fashion's Night Out T-shirts flew off the shelves. Even those who didn't buy got to see the new fashions and put a few items on their wish lists.

Dsquared Honored At Canada's Walk of Fame Gala

Canada's Walk of Fame Gala is coming this weekend and celebrity presenters such as Nelly Furtado and Rachelle Lefevre have ensured this event will be one not to be missed.

The list of inductees are pretty impressive as well and include Sex and The City's Kim Cattrall, comedian Howie Mandel and rocker Tom Cochrane. However, our eyes are on the identical twin fashion designers Dean and Dan Caten and their line Dsquared. According to New York Magazine:

"Helmed by brothers Dean and Dan Caten, the Dsquared label combines outdoorsy details (fur-trimmed coats, plaid, chunky knits) with a glam-rock aesthetic (deconstructed corsets, biker jackets, hand-stitched denim). The attire, and the denim in particular, is a favorite among musicians like Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and Madonna, who asked the duo to create more than 150 pieces for her 2002 Drowned World Tour. The brothers opened their flagship store in Milan in 2007, complete with an exclusive Champagne bar, and subsequently launched locations in Capri, Kiev, Istanbul, and Hong Kong."

We wish the twins luck, we love their new collection and their take on fashion.

Move Over Paris and Milan...Turkey Wants In

It seems the race to be the most fashionable city is on, and some who have been left off of the list, they want in. Turkey wants the city of Istanbul to be one of the top five fashion capitals with Paris, Milan, New York and London; and they have a pretty aggressive plan to get there.

Turkey, rarely heard of when it comes to fashion, has been involved for a long time. Their reputation for textiles and production of Gap and Dolce & Gabbana cannot be overlooked, which is why they believe Istanbul can be the next fashion capital. Enter Hikmet Tanriverdi, the Chairman of ITKIB, which is the body that represents manufacturers and designers in Istanbul.

Tanriverdi has big dreams, especially after his Istanbul Fashion Days, the first event that introduced designers and brands to the international press and buyers. His enthusiasm has brought in the support of government. Why? Because regardless of anything else, 55% of Turkey's exports are to Europe, and 82% of those are in apparel.

Their deadline...2023...the goal...Istanbul will become a new fashion hub...our verdict...they have a good chance.

The Death of New York?

Unfortunately, the USA recession has taken more than just jobs and businesses, it has taken titles too. It was recently announced that New York is no longer the fashion capital of the world, After 5 years in the number one spot, the Big Apple was surpassed by Milan, the home of Gucci, Prada, Armani and Versace. Rome and Paris was also passed up by Milan.

Although New York came in second, other USA cities surprisingly made a comeback... Miami too the list at number 13 for it's fashionable swimwear that is seen across the globe.

However, New York City is not going down without some impressive numbers. Although they lost their number one spot, they still emply over 175,000 fashionistas/fashionistos and generate about $10 billion in wages... still pretty impressive.

Project Earth Day Winner: Stacy Longo

Project Earth Day’s eco-runway show took place in April in NYC, proving that eco-friendly collections are not just a trend, but are becoming a reality. A whole four months later, they’ve finally determined this year’s winner, Stacy Longo.

Stacy Longo is an FIT student who won the contest because of her hand-woven outfit. The inspiration for her design? She hates seeing things wasted:

“Being in the studio all day, I saw that there were so many scraps of fabric being left there and wasted,” Longo said. “I wanted to make something out of them.”

But it seems like the judges didn’t believe the jumpsuit looked like it was made out of scraps.

Project Earth Day as been going on for three years now and hopes to pursue into the future. Check out a video from this year to see what some of the more established designers are creating from around the globe and what the NYC event is like.

Gareth Pugh's Cut Out Tops A Popular Hit

The cut out trend started fresh early this year. Popping out in magazines, showrooms and runways alike, this chic, casual look hit the big time.

Though the designs are more prominent in this years fall fashions, we are eager to wear these lightweight styles through the summer heat.

However, no one has created this signature new look like Gareth Pugh and his rockinrolla top. The tight, slashed torso reveals skin in a sexy, yet stylish, way. Letting the cool air in and keeping your aurora, not your skin, hot.

Gareth is no stranger to the spotlight or creating trends that make a huge splash. The designer made his design premier at London Fashion Week in 2006 and hasn't looked back since. British Vogue called his Spring 2007 collection "an incredible, unmissable show" where "his genius is undeniable." And his most noted accomplishment was gaining the support and respect of American Vogue Editor and icon Anna Wintour.

Almost half the creditors Escada needs to accept a bond exchange has agreed to it. The Big Screen Takes Secrecy Out of Fashion Industry

Fashion and the movies, across the globe, are colliding together to offer those who have only dreamed of Jimmy Choos to see the fashion industry in action. It all started with Sex and The City... Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte attacking New York with the fervor of a seasoned fashionista. The camera would zoom into their shoes and their accessories causing women around the world to covet the latest everything.

After that, it was a snowball affect. The Devil Wears Prada follows Anne Hathaway as she falls in love with the pretty and ugly side of the fashion business...watching her transformation literally made hearts beat faster with possibilities. Confessions of a Shopaholic made recessionistas everywhere smile with pride as they held their Hermes' scarves closer to their hearts. Bruno caused us to laugh at ourselves and not take everything too seriously, reminding us that fashion is entertainment, no matter how we look at it.

Then, the documentaries started pouring out. 11 Minutes by Jay McCaroll showed us that making it in fashion is not as easy as it seems, this multi billion dollar industry requires that even the best pay their dues. Valentino also allowed cameras into his life as he globe trotted around the world, with his dogs, leaving admirers on the edge of their seats wanting more.

And now, Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor-In-Chief, rumored to be the meanest woman in fashion, whom the Devil Made Prada was based upon, is releasing her documentary, The September Issue, on August 28th of this year. It follows Wintour as she puts together the September issue of Vogue, the issue that sells to 13 million people each year. Trailer is below:

A long time ago, the fashion industry was a secret shared by only the insiders. No one else was allowed inside. However, due to stores like Forever 21, H&M, and Target, movies like The Devil Wears Prada and September Issue, and this economy, outsiders are welcomed into this world; not as a member, but as a onlookers who feed the glamorous what they need...the spotlight.

Hong Kong is re-strategizing their fashion industry due to the recent big drops in clothing exports. As a result, everyone, including the government, is stepping in to make sure Hong Kong stays Asia's fashion center. Here are some of the changes they are making:

  • Hong Kong Fashion Week is now mixing their runways with trade shows. This encourages retailers, line reps, and buyers to have more than one reason to attend the shows.

  • Hong Kong Fashion Week is making sure the focus is about the designers and not entertainment. Hair, makeup, show and accessory companies are sponsoring designers to ensure they have the bucks to be in the shows. This is a great system of support because now designers are less likely to drop out and sponsors win because they want to be associated with a stand out designer.

  • Hong Kong designers are changing the way they make their clothes by focusing on Asian consumers. Because apparel exports are dropping, Hong Kong designers are now focusing on their supportive and lucrative clients right at home.

  • The Hong Kong government is putting 1.3 million dollars back into the fashion industry to ensure creativity continues to pump. The balance of fashion and entertainment is a goal of the reinvestment. They want the audiences to enjoy the shows and the industry, but they want consumers and buyers to shell out the bucks.

As a result on the new focus on design and not entertainment, students are finding jobs, sponsors are supporting designers, and consumers are beginning to enjoy their one of a kind "un-western" designs. It’s a great model for other fashion weeks and fashion cities going forward to examine.

Is Emma Resurrecting Burberry Profits?

Burberry hadn't been reporting the best sales recently, but a magical actress has changed the companies UK sales. Ever since Emma Watson was featured in the Burberry ad campaign, Britain says sales in the stores went up 12 percent in the last three months.

That's pretty amazing for one endorsement campaign. However, Burberry had recently taken all the necessary steps to ensure that they are surviving the economy.

They made the appropriate cuts and got the expected results. They reduced inventory by $50 million and created a $50million efficiency program. They shed 15% of its workforce last year (170 from their sewing facilities).

It's certainly sad to hear of people losing work, but with the right precautions, Burberry will be hiring again, very soon.

Christian Lacroix Says Goodbye

You think Micheal Jackson's death was a global mourning? How about the fact that Christain Lacroix announced Tuesday that his Paris fashion show would most likely be his last haute couture show.

However, the reality of fact is that Christain Lacroix is a victim of the economy, money was so tight that his friends and supporters had to pitch in to make the show happen. Only 12 models were paid, a shoe company donated the shoe.... an embroidery label worked for free.... the list goes on. Here are some qoutes from some of his admirers:

"People are very moved," said Didier Grumbach, who heads the Chambre Syndical, which regulates Paris' haute couture labels. "There's no question he is an artist and needs to express himself. The difficulty is that we are in an industry, we are not in contemporary art."

"I must admit I was really touched because for me, he is simply the greatest," said longtime fashion critic Isabelle Chalencon

"It's simply not possible that a label like this one can disappear," said Chalencon, a journalist at France-2 television.

"I can't think this is the end," Lacroix said in a backstage interview. "It's the beginning of something, I hope."

The most touching moment of the show was when Christian made his final lap around the catwalk as fans held up a banner that read "Christian Lacroix forever".

Lagerfeld Praises Chanel Number Five

Giant replicas of Chanel number 5 perfume bottles were an unforgettable and noticeable presence on Karl Lagerfeld's haute couture show at the Grand Palais last night. Not only did Lagerfeld remind the fashion industry that during hard economic time, ingenuity, like fragrance and other products, can help the keep fashion houses afloat. Coco Chanel not only understood that, her fragrance continues to be a favorite today.

The show was stunning, but we loved the way reinvented some of Chanel Classics including the day suit. Check out the innovative recreations:
