Move Over Paris and Milan...Turkey Wants In

It seems the race to be the most fashionable city is on, and some who have been left off of the list, they want in. Turkey wants the city of Istanbul to be one of the top five fashion capitals with Paris, Milan, New York and London; and they have a pretty aggressive plan to get there.

Turkey, rarely heard of when it comes to fashion, has been involved for a long time. Their reputation for textiles and production of Gap and Dolce & Gabbana cannot be overlooked, which is why they believe Istanbul can be the next fashion capital. Enter Hikmet Tanriverdi, the Chairman of ITKIB, which is the body that represents manufacturers and designers in Istanbul.

Tanriverdi has big dreams, especially after his Istanbul Fashion Days, the first event that introduced designers and brands to the international press and buyers. His enthusiasm has brought in the support of government. Why? Because regardless of anything else, 55% of Turkey's exports are to Europe, and 82% of those are in apparel.

Their deadline...2023...the goal...Istanbul will become a new fashion hub...our verdict...they have a good chance.

The Death of New York?

Unfortunately, the USA recession has taken more than just jobs and businesses, it has taken titles too. It was recently announced that New York is no longer the fashion capital of the world, After 5 years in the number one spot, the Big Apple was surpassed by Milan, the home of Gucci, Prada, Armani and Versace. Rome and Paris was also passed up by Milan.

Although New York came in second, other USA cities surprisingly made a comeback... Miami too the list at number 13 for it's fashionable swimwear that is seen across the globe.

However, New York City is not going down without some impressive numbers. Although they lost their number one spot, they still emply over 175,000 fashionistas/fashionistos and generate about $10 billion in wages... still pretty impressive.

DANSK Relaunch with 22nd Issue

DANSK Magazine, covered by the beautiful Gisele Bunchen, launched its 22nd issue Thursday.

DANSK Magazine is an international fashion title published in English. Though the magazine had a slowing period, it is now totally rejuvenated as a biannual publication, newly transformed in all ways possible across each spread.

The magazine, led by top photographer, Nino Munoz, chose Brazilian beauty Bunchen as the feature story.

“Gisele is the perfect poster girl for the signal we wish to convey: a grand transformation of DANSK as a leading international fashion magazine, a depicting global fashion phenomena for a Nordic-influenced point of view,” Editors in Chief, Uffe Buchard and Kim Grenaa, said.

The new publication, first founded in 2003, is a witty, intelligent and opinionated piece of artwork distributed in 20 different countries. Other featured stories include DANSK’s belief that grey is soon to be the new blonde and the new, wild craze of butch models.

“It recently hit us that DANSK is the world’s most independent fashion title. Safe to say, being an independent women isn’t always trouble-free, but at least no one gets to tell this lady what to wear or how to wear it,” Buchard and Grenna said.

New Webcast Series, “The Road to Fashion Week”

Imagineering Style has created a new webcast series with the help of MediaSyndicate and YouTube called, “The Road to Fashion Week.”

The twelve week series will feature designers and collections for all over the world. There are 15 participants total with no elimination periods. The judges range from a wide range of professionals in music, television, buyers and celebrities. Each designer will receive points and at the end of the show, whoever has been awarded the most points will show their collection at New York Fashion Week.

Each week the designers will face a challenge to design for, and then interviewed individually at their design studios around the world and aired online. But don’t be fooled by it’s catchy title and fun plot, this is not a reality TV show.

“This is not a reality show,” Patrice, CEO of Imagineering Style, said. “This is a chance for the world to see fashion talent from all over the world! We truly have assembled fashion designers from across the globe.

“Never before has there been such a unique international group of talented Fashion Designers combined in such a challenging arena while the world watches.”

Project Earth Day Winner: Stacy Longo

Project Earth Day’s eco-runway show took place in April in NYC, proving that eco-friendly collections are not just a trend, but are becoming a reality. A whole four months later, they’ve finally determined this year’s winner, Stacy Longo.

Stacy Longo is an FIT student who won the contest because of her hand-woven outfit. The inspiration for her design? She hates seeing things wasted:

“Being in the studio all day, I saw that there were so many scraps of fabric being left there and wasted,” Longo said. “I wanted to make something out of them.”

But it seems like the judges didn’t believe the jumpsuit looked like it was made out of scraps.

Project Earth Day as been going on for three years now and hopes to pursue into the future. Check out a video from this year to see what some of the more established designers are creating from around the globe and what the NYC event is like.
