We just talked last week about how Paris was in Dubai filming for the Dubai version of "My New BFF". Right after the much publicized press conference, Paris found herself in major trouble with Dubai officials after she was seen in her bikini on the beach enjoying herself and posing sexually.

It actually got so bad that she had to hire a team of experts to avoid getting arrested during her stay in Dubai. According to sources, Paris was terrified that she would get into trouble and her bosses warned her that an arrest is likely and has happened to many tourist.

Paris, The New Face of Dubai

Image by Randi Sokoloff / The National

Reality TV has really taken over the world. Fashion icon, Paris Hilton was in Dubai this week, and for the next 2 weeks, to shoot Paris Hilton's Dubai BFF. If you haven't seen the American version of Parish Hilton's BFF, then you can't fully understand the impact the heiress has over young adults.

The show features contestants who dutifully flock and compete to become Paris Hilton's best friend. However, the popularity of the reality TV show isn't the reason most believe Paris is in Dubai. Apparently, she's Dubai new PR because of the recent negative media reports and the property market which has crashed.

Paris' new tag line...."Dubai: It's hot!" We are not sure where this is going, but we'll keep a close eye out for any breaking news.

Happy 35th Birthday Hello Kitty

Usually, our global fashion stories include real people, places and unique pieces. But one global fashion icon turned 35 and we couldn't' resist giving her a shout out:

Happy Birthday Hello Kitty!

Hello Kitty turned 35 years old and she has a great plans to celebrate. She'll be going back to her British roots and will launch a checkered pink series collection which will include:
  • Handbags
  • Trinkets
  • Shawls
  • Kitty Bear
The new collection will be launched in September in Japan, even though her birthday isn't until November 1st...but like the diva she is, she'll celebrate all year. If you never understood the Hello Kitty phenomenon, then you'll understand after you read this.

The British embassy in Tokyo threw an early birthday party for Hello Kitty. But why Britain? Why did the Japanese choose this as the place for their number one selling icon? According to Yuko Yamaguchi, Hello Kitty designer, London was a place that Japanese girls have been admiring since the 1970's.

Definitely a great choice for a global fashionista!

Upscale Shopping Centers Slowly Take Over Europe

Ahh... the upscale shopping center. The place where middle and upper class citizens across the world get their luxury goods... especially when they live in a city that's deemed less than fashionable.

The shopping center has been around for years, especially in the west, where the need for instant gratification, luxury fashion, and the high end designer lines reached as far out as rural areas who have never seen a Saks Fifth Ave or a Nordstorms.

Last week, in Berlin, beyond the Prussian guards and a quaint little village, the Berlin Designer Outlet Center was born. It was built to resemble a German country village and is apart of a growing trend across Europe. Last year alone the number of outlets in Europe increased and the openings are still coming.

McArthurGlen was founded in 1993 by J.W. Kaempfer and the company opened their first designer outlet in Europe in 1998 and they now operate 17 outlets and generated 2.8 billion last year.

Think back, when the designer outlet first hit America... how they slowly grew into a phenomenon and how now you can find one around the corner or in the closet upscale city. Now think about the amount of land available in Europe. They may be on to something.

San Paulo Fashion Week Anti-Racism Campaign

Earlier this month we reported that Brazil's San Paulo Fashion Week was being forced to have 10% of black or ingenious models because of intense pressure from anti-racism groups protesting about the lack of diversity and their long standing and open bias towards white models.

The show started on the 17th of June and will last until the 22nd. Here are a few comments from the ever growing controversy:

"There shouldn't only be whites in the Fashion Week. There should be more blacks, to show black culture, show the black beauty in society," Caroline Naiara, 16, told AFP.

"We think 10 percent is very little. And there shouldn't have to be quotas for black models. We want more to see black producers, black stylists, people who work in fashion generally, to be more a part of the market," says Andre de Souza.

According to APF: "A few employees, though, said quietly -- and well away from reporters' microphones -- that the measure did not take into account that the European-inspired fashions were created for thin white bodies, not more rounded and chesty black physiques."

Global Fashion for a Local Cause

Handmade purses and jewelry from Bali, India, Guatemala, Cambodia and Honduras... and all mostly under $50 as well as charity based profits? Five Accessories based in Chicago has taken global fashion to charitable heights.

The story behind the brand is just as exotic as it's merchandise. Christine, the owner, was vacationing with her husband in Bali and got wooed by the local artisans who created there. As a result Five Accessories was born and their mission is to create programs for individuals who need income while donating portion of sales to charities that support the arts.

A great example is the brands collaboration with StreetWise. The company employees Streetwise vendors to create accessories for a line called Off The Street, the artist actually reuse discarded ticket stubs and bus passes to create the line.

Intriguing and globally fashionable.

The Peacock Makes A Comeback

One bird that represents a multitude of different colors, cultures and textures is the peacock and H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) has decided to bring it back by collaborating with Matthew Wiliamson.

‘I wanted to create a strong urban collection fused with the brand’s signature symbols and shapes. It’s been fascinating to search back through my archives to isolate the most iconic pieces, then rework them for H&M. Colour is one of the defining aspects of my signature style, I focused on the iconic peacock motif seen across my collections to develop a palette of blues, chartreuse and emerald. The spirit of the collection is both covetable and precious,’ says Williamson in a recent press release.

‘I think people will really love this collection. I love the way Matthew mixes prints in the dresses, and the colour-blocking of the tailoring. It’s very elegant, but there are lots of things you can wear in a really relaxed way, too. The mix and match of all the embroidery, the prints, the sequins and the colours makes all of the clothes very special,' says Margareta van den Bosch, H&M Creative Advisor.

This collection will come out in parts. The first part of the Williamson Collection will be relased from May 14 focusing on summer apparel. Soon after a menswear collection will follow.

Brazilian Fashion Week Sets "Black Model Quota"

Unfortunate as it is, seems the black models and high fashion are still a long way from being on the same page. According to the organizers of Sao Paulo Fashion Week, this year the government is forcing 1 out of every 10 of their models be black.

You'd think in Brazil this wouldn't be an issue, but prosecutors are actually forcing Sao Paulo FW to get it right this year. Last year only eight of the 344 models in the 2008 show were non-white. And if they don't, they will be fined 120,00 dollars.

Unfortunately, being such a diverse place to live, black models actually believe its easier to get work abroad than there.

Global 411: Wearing Tribal

One trend that never goes out of style is tribal fashion. From Morocco to Africa, tribal fashions have been around for centuries. Here are 4 factors that bring tribal trends to your fashion style:

1. The Print! The print is probably the number one feature of tribal. The tribal print is bold, colorful and simple all at the same time.

2. The Accessories! Tribal fashion demands accessories, especially if paired with a simple ensemble. You can pack on gobs of bangles and a huge chunky necklace to take a boring look to a globe trotting statement.

3. Color! Color is an amazing feature of the tribal fashion trend. Whether its earth tones or are bright patterns, color can be pulled into the look without making you look over the top.

4. Fabric! We love tribal fabrics because not only are they exotic but they seem to fit a woman's body in just the right places.

Here's a great video by celebrity stylist Zoe Lem that gives some amazing fashion tips on incorporating tribal trends into your everyday wardrobe.
